5 Reasons Wedding Planning Stinks

Peter and I at a friends wedding two months ago.

Peter and I at a friends wedding two months ago.

Today marks one more month until the wedding and I’m so tired of planning.

I will say i’m not as stressed as a lot of people said I would be or as bad as it was for a few of my friends who recently got married.

I am irritated though. And I don’t think there is any fixing that until the day AFTER the wedding. Hopefully the day of. Sooner? A girl can dream. Ha

If I’ve ever talked to anyone about their experience with planning their wedding they say one or two of a few things:

1. Having to limit their guests

Sometimes what can happen is you have a small budget and feel you need to limit the amount of people you invite.

I have a couple responses to this.

First of all-It’s your wedding so you get to invite whoever you dang well please. Sometimes people limit because they don’t want a big wedding, low cash, small venue…Yadda yadda. Honestly they’re all good reasons, but I will say one thing (and I only know from what others have told me and my experience with others weddings)..Not all of your guests will come. Life gets in the way one way or another. You might even get people who said they wouldn’t come or people who didn’t respond..Or the best one: the person who wasn’t even invited.

I will say that I’m glad I’m not limiting. The wedding isn’t about me, but the people in my life and celebrating this new chapter with me.

Well…It is about me a little bit 😉

2. Low cash flow

It sucks. Weddings are ridiculously expensive. There was a conversation I had not too long ago with someone who said they hated their wedding cause they didn’t get to do what they wanted. I will say that one perk of a long engagement (and working the whole time) is that you get more time to pay for things a little at a time rather than having a baseball bat, nay, a bomb taken to your bank account.

My suggestion (and I’m by no means a guru at this stuff) would be to pick your deal breakers. Mine were photography and the dress. Those were the most important and I decided to make the other things, borrow things from people that they used for their wedding, or just forgo the whole thing. You get the idea.

Some people try to fix their problem by going into debt from their wedding. My advice. Just don’t. Save your money for a house, a car, something other than the thing that’s only gonna last one day.

3. The little things

This is the big thing for me. I’m so tired of all the little things I have to decide. In the end am I really going to care about the flowers at the alter? Probably not.

4. The big things

The catering, the helpers, the decorations, the dress, the photographer. Or even wedding party. This part was super easy for me until I had people actually ask me if they were in the wedding. I would have loved to have 20 bridesmaids…But at the same time the thought gives me a head ache.

5. EVERYTHING

Sometimes…Weddings just aren’t your thing.

I, for one, am in-between. I like certain things about wedding planning, but I definitely have things I could care less about.

I think a lot of the time people get so wrapped up in all this wedding stuff and lose sight of what really matters. I’ve heard a couple people express confusion about why someone would put themselves through it and I find I’m shocked.

Isn’t it obvious? I mean what got you in this situation in the first place?

The day Peter proposed he has been the biggest focus for me. In the end I could care less about the photography, the cake, the food, the decorations…Because what I should really focus on is the fact I get to marry this amazing guy who-amazingly enough, seems to really love me. (Ok…I know he loves me. Haha)

I’ll never understand why people don’t focus on the relationship part. Cause in the end you’re going to be married and you don’t get to live in wedding land anymore. You get to live life.

As a last thought though-If you are going to go all out by inviting a million guests, spend all your money, and do everything you’ve ever wanted..Try and enjoy it. It isn’t worth stressing out over so much. DELEGATE people!

I swear at some point, when I’m married probably, I will stop with the wedding posts, but I just had to get that off my chest.

Sorry about my long period of silence. Life got in the way. 😉

Toodles.

Wretched Tooth

I will start off by saying-Woopsy!

Just so you know-I haven’t failed at taking a picture every day, I still have them…On my camera. However that’s where they have stayed and I’m afraid I’m so behind on posting that I might just start anew. Either that or I will be bombarding you all with a full blog of photos. Just without descriptions.

So here start the excuses.

First off-My dog died. The poor thing was in so much pain we finally had to let him go. It was really terrible actually. Not that it wouldn’t ever not be terrible to put down your pet/family member.

Work has also been taking up a huge amount of my time and energy. Not to mention being out of town as well as finishing my very last term of school (HECK YEAH!!)

After I got through that I thought “Hey! I’m really sucking at this blog thing, I should update” and then I ended up with a tooth problem.

Oh and not just ANY tooth problem. It was a stay in bed for 4 days, scream your head of, puke, have a seizure (meds), cry like a baby tooth pain.

Not to worry. $700 dollars later and a drill through my crowned tooth and its all better. Well-Except that i’m $700 poorer than I was before. Ha

April 4th-forgive the cliche bathroom mirror picture. I really hate taking them. However-Check out how long my hair is! I wanna chop it off. SO. BAD.

April 4th-forgive the cliche bathroom mirror picture. I really hate taking them. However-Check out how long my hair is! I wanna chop it off. SO. BAD.

On a different note-wedding plans are under way. My church threw a shower for me this last weekend and it was a blast. I’m really so blessed to have so many loving people in my life. I was so happy to see everyone.

I finally ordered paper for my invitations today and I hope to have them done really soon so I can send them out ASAP. I swear..I hate this part of the planning.

The corsages and such are mostly done and I finally (FINALLY) finished the bouquets. It was such a relief to be done with the wires poking my fingers. Instead I’m opting for burning them with hot glue.

Lately I’ve been on a TV show binge. Suburgatory, Call the Midwife, and Frasier. I recommend all of them. Just sayin’.

I should hit the hay as some would say. I’m quite exhausted and I have another long day ahead of me.

I swear (didn’t someone say not to make promises you can’t keep?) I will get better at this.

Live long and prosper.

100 Days Until Marriage

March 13th-100 days until I get married!

March 13th-100 days until I get married!

I’ve been engaged for 437 days. And my advice to you? Don’t wait so long…If you can help it.

And by the way-wanting more time to plan the wedding is NOT an excuse.

I had, and still have, every reason to marry Peter. When he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife I said yes, very loudly, and I meant it.

So why did we wait?

Most believe that we are waiting because a family member was getting married or that I had other members of my family pushing me, for what I believe their own selfish reason, to wait longer. That isn’t it.

You probably won’t believe me, but there was only one reason; I wanted to finish school. Getting married was a big enough push to get me to finish what I had started. I was 7 classes away from finishing my associates degree and I had been coming up with reason upon reason to not go back.

When I get married I want to be married. I don’t want to waste my time, and money, on something I didn’t care about..Plus I know myself enough that if I got married and moved away I wouldn’t finish it and I would be really disappointed in myself.

I’m not saying that school isn’t important and you shouldn’t do it, because it is, I’ve just never been passionate about it. Sure, if one day I have an epiphany and decide to go back to school for something, I will…But until then I don’t think there is a point in spending money to figure out what I want to do.

Don’t worry, I’m not naive enough to think that marriage will fix everything or that it will be the easiest thing I will ever do. I’m positive it will be the hardest and best thing I will ever do.

I’m not sure if this long engagement thing would be easier or harder if we lived closer together. As Christians, Peter and I believed that it was right to wait until after marriage to sleep, and live, together. So let’s be honest here…Being engaged for a long time is freaking hard. I’m so happy to wait for this though. Of course, I’m looking forward to SO many things when it comes to getting married and part of that is growing together and glorifying God in our relationship. Glorifying God is what we were created for, and God commands us to wait.

1 Corinthians 10:31 “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

This last year or so has been really hard for the one reason I just mentioned, and so many others. I only get to see Pete on the weekends because of our work schedule and on the rare week night we’re able to meet in the middle somewhere. I have to keep telling myself to take things one day at a time and the time will fly by. And believe me, it truly has. I only have a few months left and I have so much to plan. Not just for the wedding (cause that only lasts one day), but for my life with the man I love.

I thank God every day for bringing him into my life and I will try really…really hard to enjoy these 100 days I have left with my family and friends. I can do it!

As for other countdowns-I have 5 days until this term is over and I graduate with my AAOT. YES!

All of that being said-I hope it didn’t sound like a long drawn out complaint, because that wasn’t my intent..Just musings. 🙂

Thanks for reading. And sorry for all the mushy love stuff. Haha

Until next time!

I’m not very good at this…

So I’ll admit…I’m AWFUL at writing blogs. I don’t know why I keep putting it off until I have several photos to add. But-Let’s move on.

I’m not gonna spend a lot of time on this one cause I’m going to do another blog entry in a minute with just one photo..So here it goes.

February 25th-Yeah...One of those last minute ones. Almost forgot. But on another note-this stuff is delish!

Cooped Up

Portland weather is completely unpredictable. This weekend has been awful.

What happened to when I was a kid and would go out in the snow and play for days? When things being cancelled was exciting and a relief? What happened to not caring about how cold it is or how icy the roads are?

Oh yeah-I grew up and got a job and a fiance.

Last week started off super busy with the last of my trainings and trying to get the lesson schedule done at work and then Thursday hit us with a big snow storm that left us stuck in the house until this afternoon and they skill cancelled school. It took me a half hour to dig my car (Penny) out of the driveway.

Saturday I got so sick of being in the house I decided to walk to the store and ended up carrying two cans of chili, a jug of milk, and hot dogs in a bag all the way back. Not the smartest idea I’ve ever had-but that’s alright.

I wouldn’t mind getting an unexpected weekend off from work and everything if it didn’t mean I couldn’t go anywhere. Sunday Portland issued a warning to not go outside because of the icy conditions.

You central states and maybe eastern states may laugh at our whining over here-but not only were we completely unprepared, but it isn’t the same here as it is everywhere else. Plus the ice makes it hard for anyone.

But with that being said-I’ll be the first to admit that some people here make a bigger deal out of it than there really needs to be, plus there are some terrible drivers here. Some people tend to be overly confident and that ends them in an accident.

Onto the challenge.

February 4th-I got Peter's ring not too long ago. I waited to post it because he didn't know I had gotten in yet. Sorry-No picture yet, just a teaser! But it's perfect.

Wedding plans are moving along nicely. I’m trying really hard to get the majority, if not all, of the planning done ASAP so I don’t have to stress and worry too much later.

February 5th-My morning meal for those 5am shifts.

February 5th-My morning meal for those 5am shifts.

Instant oatmeal is seriously my life saver. I have a bad habit of not eating most of the day. This has kept me from doing that too much. 🙂

February 6th-I got the school and needed a drink of water. Only then did I realize the water had been completely frozen while in my car over night.

And so starts the snow storm.

February 7th-I was not happy to wake up to this. I wasn't too upset about the day off-but I didn't know it'd be the WHOLE weekend.

This was just the beginning.

February 8th-Everything iced over just on time for my nieces 8th birthday party. Poor thing had to cancel her big plans and not as many people turned up. I'm glad we made it though.

The ice ruined the weekend for sure. No visit with the fiance. The realization brought on some crying on my part for sure. Ha

All the negativity aside..There is one good thing to say about being cooped up-I got a LOT of cleaning and organizing done this weekend. I threw away a lot of stuff I didn’t need. There’s always more to do, but I’m glad I got done what I did.

Crazy part was I threw away a white garbage bag full of home work I’ve had since freshman year of high school. Crazy.

Well I’m sorry about the late post-I hope you all enjoyed your weekend!

So. Much. Partying!

Last week was completely insane-and this weekend was even crazier. I’ve been trying to keep myself sane and as a result I’ve become a bit like a zombie. At work I find that while I’m guarding I’m all focused and alert, but once I’m back in the office I’ve almost forgotten what I was just doing. School isn’t helping with this and neither are the trainings I’m supposed to be doing at work.

School has been interesting lately. I never expected that I would be doing a drawing for Math class.

January 29th-My tesselation project for Math class. Bird. :) I suppose I could have gotten more creative, but I just wanted to get it done.

I always look forward to the weekend ’cause it’s when I get to see Peter, but this weekend held so much more than I thought it would.

A good friend of mine (and the family) got engaged this last year and is getting married soon. So I ended up at her house for her bridal shower.

January 31st-Amy with her ribbon bouquet. She's so pretty!

My sister was very insistant that she wasn’t going to find out the gender of her baby. I was SUPER insistant that she did find out. I have no patience. Haha So she decided to do a Baby Gender Reaveal party. It ended up being more crowded and fun than I thought it would be.

I have been in the room for 7 births. Call me crazy, but it is truly amazing seeing that baby for the first time. Although I don’t enjoy seeing…Well you know. 😉 Anyways-I could go on and on about babies, births, and life but I think that’s more for a blog on it’s own so we’ll move on.

January 30th-Here's the envelope with the results. It was torturous holding it.

I’m going to move fast between days so I can write the other blog I have. There were a couple unexpected things this weekend so I have more pictures. So stay tuned for that.

February 1st-My sister, our friend Amy, and her husband cutting the cake and finding out they are having a 4th GIRL! My brothers were excited, but they really wanted a boy. haha

Alright-Who’s a SeaHawks fan?!

February 2nd-Ok...Aparently Amy is the main feature of this blog. Haha Go SeaHawks!!!

Every year I go to our friends house to watch the Super Bowl. I’m not the biggest football person, however I’m a huge sports person having played sports since a kid. Anyway-It was really fun to have a team from close to home go to the Super Bowl and actually win. It was awesome. I did feel a little bad for the Broncos though.

February 3rd-A special package came in the mail today. My cake topper! And it's perfect. I'm sooooo excited to use it at my wedding. I don't know why I had such a hard time finding a topper I liked, but this one is awesome.

I’m making quite a few big strides in the wedding planning. It’s a lot of work, but I have a lot of people who are always willing to help-which is awesome.

This last week and weekend has left my brain all jumbled, but that could be mostly due to lack of sleep. Hopefully I catch up because I would really rather not get sick.

Tip: Got a cold? Eat an Orange…or….Just get a lot of Vitamin C, sleep, and water.

Ok-off to make that other blog!

Cheer and Shoes

Merry (Late) Christmas, everyone! I hope it was stupendous!

My Christmas was really great. I didn’t leave the house once on Christmas Eve and it felt amazing. My sister and I ended up watching Startrek and Star Trek Into Darkness.

Side note: Who loves toe socks?! I love them. My sister and I held toes…I know… Weird.

Wedding planning is well under way. I got all the bridesmaids shoes today. The clerk at the store looked at me like I was crazy when she saw that I had bought 9 pairs of shoes. (3 of them were for a friends wedding me and two of my sisters are in)

1545567_10202491888556487_51986629_n

Believe me, I felt pretty crazy as well. It was strange too cause I hate shoes and I especially hate buying them.

So I have a little over 170 days until my wedding. It recently hit me how soon that is. 6 months isn’t that far away and I definitely have a lot to do. AH! I couldn’t be more excited.

Here are a couple tips for anyone wanting to get married:

1. Seriously, you shouldn’t be spending 30-40+ on shoes. That’s insane. The most comfortable shoes are going to hurt by the end of the night anyway. Believe me….I’ve been to plenty of weddings. Payless people!

2. Try and find some shoes you and your bridesmaids might wear again. I know it sounds cliche, but it makes it easier to spend money on things.

3. Make as much of the decorations, accessories ect., as you can! If you can’t, Etsy is your best friend.

Bobby pins with pearls wired on. A nice touch to a hair-do for a wedding or a dinner out. So easy to make.

4. In the end-All that matters is you’re marrying the person you love. Look for a marriage, NOT a wedding. The wedding is only one day.

I’ll probably have more on the tip matter as I get closer to my wedding and make mistakes. Ha!

All my best! And thanks for reading.

How to Make a Button Bouquet

You’ll want to pick your colors first. Mine are purple and green…Make sure to have different shades, so that it isn’t bland, but stay within your color scheme so as not to clash with the rest of your theme. You will also want to have a color to off set. I used ivory and white. It helps to have an accent.

IMG_4442

Supplies:

Buttons of various sizes and shades

Wire (I used 22 gauge). You can buy at any craft store like Joann’s. I ended up getting alot

Floral tape

Wire cutter

Pliers (to bend sharp ends in)

Ribbon

IMG_4424IMG_4437

Start off by planning out your “flowers”. I tended to use 2-3 per flower, but that depends on how big you want them to be. If the button is pretty thick it’s OK to use just one.

IMG_4426

Then cut the wire to the desired length. You’ll want some to be longer than others so you have room to twist the others around each other.

Bend the wire in half and slide the buttons on. You want it to be doubled because otherwise the buttons won’t be as stable.

IMG_4446IMG_4448IMG_4451IMG_4452IMG_4453IMG_4454

This is what one of mine looked like when finished.

1489268_10202390005689479_576803852_n

It really depends on how big you want your bouquets to be but I used 30-40 “flowers”.

IMG_4438

Then start taking them and twisting them around each other. Bend the buttons on the wires around as you go to try and shape the bouquet so it’s round.

IMG_4457IMG_4460IMG_4461

Once you have all the flowers on the bouquet and it’s as big as you want start adding some here and there to fill in the spaces.

Bend the end of the wires in to avoid them sticking through the tape and/or rubbon.

Then wrap floral tape on a couple times. After that wrap it in the ribbon you want.

IMG_4434

For this tutorial I chose just lace, but I will be using ribbon and just tying a bow of lace on.

Enjoy your new button bouquets!

A helpful video I watched. They do it a little different than I do, but it’s a good video to watch:

In the midst of buttons

So I decided that I wanted a way of sort of “scrap booking” my wedding planning so I figured that blogging would help. Also a good way of remembering. I’m too lazy to journal anymore. Maybe sometime I’ll get back to it.

Today I have 186 days (or just under 7 months…It sounds like less) until I marry Peter…And I’m way ahead of the game on a lot of things. Yesterday I went to Fabric Depot (a craft persons heaven on earth) and got the muslin to make the dresses for the bridesmaids. No I’m not making them, i’m not insane. Hopefully they give me a call and give me a quote on the fabric for the final dresses. Oh chiffon…So wonderful.

Other than that I’ve made my bouquet (I’ll post pictures after the wedding) and one of the bridesmaids bouquets. Image

I’ve made a lot of “flowers” so far and i’ll be making the bridemaids help me with theirs. The one I made is for my maid of honor who is out of state.

The whole idea of button bouquets happened by accident. I was forced to use pinterest (it actually helps me stay on track for some things) for my wedding stuff and happened upon this idea. Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of DIY tutorials for them, but I think I might do one myself to make it easier on other people.

Anyways! That’s all for now. I’ll be back soon with the tutorial.
