5 Reasons Wedding Planning Stinks

Peter and I at a friends wedding two months ago.

Peter and I at a friends wedding two months ago.

Today marks one more month until the wedding and I’m so tired of planning.

I will say i’m not as stressed as a lot of people said I would be or as bad as it was for a few of my friends who recently got married.

I am irritated though. And I don’t think there is any fixing that until the day AFTER the wedding. Hopefully the day of. Sooner? A girl can dream. Ha

If I’ve ever talked to anyone about their experience with planning their wedding they say one or two of a few things:

1. Having to limit their guests

Sometimes what can happen is you have a small budget and feel you need to limit the amount of people you invite.

I have a couple responses to this.

First of all-It’s your wedding so you get to invite whoever you dang well please. Sometimes people limit because they don’t want a big wedding, low cash, small venue…Yadda yadda. Honestly they’re all good reasons, but I will say one thing (and I only know from what others have told me and my experience with others weddings)..Not all of your guests will come. Life gets in the way one way or another. You might even get people who said they wouldn’t come or people who didn’t respond..Or the best one: the person who wasn’t even invited.

I will say that I’m glad I’m not limiting. The wedding isn’t about me, but the people in my life and celebrating this new chapter with me.

Well…It is about me a little bit πŸ˜‰

2. Low cash flow

It sucks. Weddings are ridiculously expensive. There was a conversation I had not too long ago with someone who said they hated their wedding cause they didn’t get to do what they wanted. I will say that one perk of a long engagement (and working the whole time) is that you get more time to pay for things a little at a time rather than having a baseball bat, nay, a bomb taken to your bank account.

My suggestion (and I’m by no means a guru at this stuff) would be to pick your deal breakers. Mine were photography and the dress. Those were the most important and I decided to make the other things, borrow things from people that they used for their wedding, or just forgo the whole thing. You get the idea.

Some people try to fix their problem by going into debt from their wedding. My advice. Just don’t. Save your money for a house, a car, something other than the thing that’s only gonna last one day.

3. The little things

This is the big thing for me. I’m so tired of all the little things I have to decide. In the end am I really going to care about the flowers at the alter? Probably not.

4. The big things

The catering, the helpers, the decorations, the dress, the photographer. Or even wedding party. This part was super easy for me until I had people actually ask me if they were in the wedding. I would have loved to have 20 bridesmaids…But at the same time the thought gives me a head ache.

5. EVERYTHING

Sometimes…Weddings just aren’t your thing.

I, for one, am in-between. I like certain things about wedding planning, but I definitely have things I could care less about.

I think a lot of the time people get so wrapped up in all this wedding stuff and lose sight of what really matters. I’ve heard a couple people express confusion about why someone would put themselves through it and I find I’m shocked.

Isn’t it obvious? I mean what got you in this situation in the first place?

The day Peter proposed he has been the biggest focus for me. In the end I could care less about the photography, the cake, the food, the decorations…Because what I should really focus on is the fact I get to marry this amazing guy who-amazingly enough, seems to really love me. (Ok…I know he loves me. Haha)

I’ll never understand why people don’t focus on the relationship part. Cause in the end you’re going to be married and you don’t get to live in wedding land anymore. You get to live life.

As a last thought though-If you are going to go all out by inviting a million guests, spend all your money, and do everything you’ve ever wanted..Try and enjoy it. It isn’t worth stressing out over so much. DELEGATE people!

I swear at some point, when I’m married probably, I will stop with the wedding posts, but I just had to get that off my chest.

Sorry about my long period of silence. Life got in the way. πŸ˜‰

Case of the “Mondays”

You know that phrase “I’ve got the case of the Mondays”? I have a theory that it actually lasts all week. There is no such thing as “Case of the Mondays” anyway…I’m gonna go with “I have a case of the week days” from now on. Not only does the weekend never last long enough (besides the fact that I work on Saturdays and sometimes Sundays), but the workload always seems to pile up. You catch up on one thing, only to have something else added on.

With wedding planning it gets even more complicated…and then working full time and going to school part time. Today I felt like my head was going to burst after Math class and then I had to go to a training for work and found I hit my limit 10 minutes into the new information. I find myself sitting and staring at a wall not thinking about anything…Either that or repeating “5 months” over and over in my head.

Not to worry! I haven’t gone completely insane. I definitely got a little stressed out there for a minute, but that’s where good friends come in and weekend trips to friends and the fiance. Thank the lord.

January 25th-I went up to see a friend (and my fiance) and spent Saturday with her. We picked out her dress for my wedding and then ended up touring around the mall. The photobooth was hilarious.

My trip up north was successful. I wish I’d had more time to visit my friend as well as Peter, but the time will come where I’m more free to do that.

We went to Davids Bridal and bought her dress for my wedding *Happy Dance* so that’s one down and 5 to go! Is it just me or are the consultants at that place pretty consistently grumpy and/or inattentive? Ok maybe not THAT often, but this chick wasn’t the best. Not only was she grumpy and inattentive but she was really disorganized resulting in us having to come back after we had already gone to dinner and everything. Oy.

Tip of the day:Β

Don’t listen to the people at Davids Bridal about shipment dates. They’re never right. All they want is to get you to buy the dress, full price, ASAP. Don’t let them be pushy-it isn’t their wedding anyways!

January 26th-Yep...Super lame photo. But it goes to show how big the Seahawks are right now. This was in the news paper (make a Seahawks airplane). I found it a little funny. Go Hawks!

I meant to take better photos of my trip (Peter doesn’t like his photo being taken anyways) but ended up with this photo of something that was in the paper. Who’s excited for the Super Bowl this weekend! Yayah! Go Hawks!

January 27th-I found this hat on Amazon and just had to buy it for my sister. She was so happy she slept in it that night.

I don’t know if any of you are Doctor Who? fans, but my sister is. Haha. She was so excited about this hat I bought her. I really need to get back to watching it.

January 28th-I bought these for my wedding. I thought it would make some of the pictures fun. Anyway-here are the nieces modeling some of them for me.

My nieces have been in Canada this last week and so I finally get to see them. They are so cute! Anyways-They modeled the new photo booth props I got for the wedding. I thought it would make some fun photos for that day. πŸ™‚

Anyways-I hope you all are having a good week and not the “case of the weekdays”. Almost to the middle! πŸ˜€

Au revoir.

Extra Tibit:

Anyone ever watch Mr. Bean? I used to love it. Anyways-I ran across this Youtube video of the best stuff. It’s worth a watch if you need a laugh.

How to Make Your Own Cake Stand (DIY)

When I was talking to the person I am having make my cake she asked me if I had a cake stand because I’m not planning on having a very big cake which could make it easy for it to get lost. I checked on Etsy and although I found some really great cake stands I was not willing to spend $75-$160 on a cake stand I’ll probably use just for my wedding…And maybe a few times after that.

I can’t take full credit for this idea (although I was trying to figure out a way to make it), but I decided to go to Goodwill and buy a candle stick holder and a glass plate and glue them together.

So here we go!

Supplies:

Glass Epoxy (more permanent) or Hot glue

Candle stick holder

Glass plate

Patience

You can get glue that is also used for fish tanks. It's more permanent, and also water proof.

First you want to wash the candle stick holder and plate-Especially if it’s from Goodwill! Then dry (duh).

It can be as fancy as you want of course or you could go with a colored plate...just be careful because if the design pops out it makes it hard to keep the plate flat on the candle stick.

Put the glue on the rim of the candle stick holder. Try to make it even, but it's not a huge deal as long as the rim is covered. Keep in mind it will spread when the plate is placed on top.

Carefully place the plate on top and press firmly and evenly.

You will need to let it cure for 24 hours. I added glue to it after it was mostly dry just to be sure.

See? Super easy! And it only cost about $10 and about $5 for the glue. But depending on the plate and holder you get you could probably do it for WAY cheaper.

You can also spray paint it if you want. The sky is the limit on this one. πŸ™‚

I can’t wait to use this for my wedding, and since I used the epoxy-hopefully many more times. πŸ˜€

Busy Bee

I keep telling myself I will blog more often, but it isn’t happening.

I finally got a day to do a whole bunch of stuff cause my math class was cancelled and I wasn’t about to wait 3 hours at school for my yoga class. So I mailed out a BUNCH of save-the-dates, started laundry, copied a couple discs for some people, finished my address list of labels, and made a cake stand. I feel like I’ve been pretty productive.

Today is the 21st-so that means I have 5 months until I am married! YES! I’m so excited! And I have so much to do. AH! haha

January 17th-I've been getting a lot of ads in the mail for weddings especially. I'm not sure why, but I thought this was super funny.

January 18th-Peter and I went to Bed Bath and Beyond on Saturday to register for our wedding. It wasn't very hard and I didn't end up registering for as much as I thought. But then again I registered on Amazon.com as well.

January 19th-At the Portland Bridal Show. My friend and sister went in the photo booth with me. So fun! I wish I could have this at my wedding.

Sunday was the Portland Bridal Show and I went with a big group of people. It was a lot of fun. My friend who is getting married soon won the 3 night stay at Skamania Lodge which was SUPER awesome.

January 20th-I decided to make my own cake stand out of a plate and a candle stick holder. It looks awesome. DIY to come!

Wedding tips of the day:

#1 Don’t waste your money on cake stands! Make your own (DIY Tutorial to come!) or borrow one. Seriously. It’s worth it.

#2Β Don’t hold back on registering. If you’re worried it’s too much, don’t. Think of it as a future shopping list. If someone doesn’t get you something, then you can get it later. Also-make sure to add a variety of things so people have stuff to choose from.

January 21st-Sam and Modelo (My brothers dog) in the back yard. Mo apparently didn't want to pose and Sam gave me a super big yawn. Thanks boys.

Sorry it was so lame. But I’ll try and come up with more exciting things…Like a knitting project. πŸ™‚

Random stuffage

Ok! I’m back. I’m still tinkering around with a thought I had the other day about hashtags (BLECH) so I haven’t finished the blog I was thinking about. I’d rather avoid sounding too one sided so when I feel more comfortable with it I’ll post it. πŸ˜€

Anyway-work and school seem to be keeping me busy. When I’m not there I’m usually sleeping. This week has also been dedicated to mailing out save-the-dates and tracking people down for addresses.

I have to say that this part of the wedding planning is driving me completely insane. Even after messaging people I have been ignored when requesting addresses. Not sure what that’s all about-But whatever.

So wedding tip #1 of the day:

Don’t worry about not getting peoples addresses. If they don’t give it to you (especially after a personal request) there is no one to blame for them not being invited except THEM.

Side note: If you have a long engagement in the works-Start on getting addresses ASAP. It’s a total pain.

January 13th-While watching Sherlock I got a cute picture of my dog, Sam. He really likes it when we're all in the same room cause he likes to hang with us.

January 14th-busy addressing, stamping, and sealing envelopes for save-the-dates. Rolls of 100 stamps, and a sealer. LIFE SAVING.

Wedding tip #2: Get labels for your addresses. BOTH address and return. It’ll save your wrists. Super cheap too.

January 15th-Do you remember these movies? Oh those were the days. I used to LOVE Rugrats and Home Alone. Home Alone 2 wasn't as good though.

January 16th-Who knew this was a yoga move? I used to do it all the time as a kid.

January 16th-Just felt like adding a second one. I really like doing this one for fun. I do a couple variations on it for kicks.

Yoga is going well so far. I still despise “downward facing dog” and prefer “upward facing dog”.

Seriously- How is that even restful? Maybe I’m just a weakling, but I hate it mostly cause of the head rush it gives me.

Getting myself to the gym has been difficult this week. Totally unmotivated and exhausted. We’ll see if I even make it tonight.

Anyway-That’s all for now. I’ll try and be better about not posting so many pictures at a time. Although be prepared for when I’m on my 2 week honeymoon cause I will guarantee that I will NOT be blogging during that time. I’ll be playing a lot of catch-up. πŸ™‚

Cheer and Shoes

Merry (Late) Christmas, everyone! I hope it was stupendous!

My Christmas was really great. I didn’t leave the house once on Christmas Eve and it felt amazing. My sister and I ended up watching Startrek and Star Trek Into Darkness.

Side note: Who loves toe socks?! I love them. My sister and I held toes…I know… Weird.

Wedding planning is well under way. I got all the bridesmaids shoes today. The clerk at the store looked at me like I was crazy when she saw that I had bought 9 pairs of shoes. (3 of them were for a friends wedding me and two of my sisters are in)

1545567_10202491888556487_51986629_n

Believe me, I felt pretty crazy as well. It was strange too cause I hate shoes and I especially hate buying them.

So I have a little over 170 days until my wedding. It recently hit me how soon that is. 6 months isn’t that far away and I definitely have a lot to do. AH! I couldn’t be more excited.

Here are a couple tips for anyone wanting to get married:

1. Seriously, you shouldn’t be spending 30-40+ on shoes. That’s insane. The most comfortable shoes are going to hurt by the end of the night anyway. Believe me….I’ve been to plenty of weddings. Payless people!

2. Try and find some shoes you and your bridesmaids might wear again. I know it sounds cliche, but it makes it easier to spend money on things.

3. Make as much of the decorations, accessories ect., as you can! If you can’t, Etsy is your best friend.

Bobby pins with pearls wired on. A nice touch to a hair-do for a wedding or a dinner out. So easy to make.

4. In the end-All that matters is you’re marrying the person you love. Look for a marriage, NOT a wedding. The wedding is only one day.

I’ll probably have more on the tip matter as I get closer to my wedding and make mistakes. Ha!

All my best! And thanks for reading.

How to Make a Button Bouquet

You’ll want to pick your colors first. Mine are purple and green…Make sure to have different shades, so that it isn’t bland, but stay within your color scheme so as not to clash with the rest of your theme. You will also want to have a color to off set. I used ivory and white. It helps to have an accent.

IMG_4442

Supplies:

Buttons of various sizes and shades

Wire (I used 22 gauge). You can buy at any craft store like Joann’s. I ended up getting alot

Floral tape

Wire cutter

Pliers (to bend sharp ends in)

Ribbon

IMG_4424IMG_4437

Start off by planning out your “flowers”. I tended to use 2-3 per flower, but that depends on how big you want them to be. If the button is pretty thick it’s OK to use just one.

IMG_4426

Then cut the wire to the desired length. You’ll want some to be longer than others so you have room to twist the others around each other.

Bend the wire in half and slide the buttons on. You want it to be doubled because otherwise the buttons won’t be as stable.

IMG_4446IMG_4448IMG_4451IMG_4452IMG_4453IMG_4454

This is what one of mine looked like when finished.

1489268_10202390005689479_576803852_n

It really depends on how big you want your bouquets to be but I used 30-40 “flowers”.

IMG_4438

Then start taking them and twisting them around each other. Bend the buttons on the wires around as you go to try and shape the bouquet so it’s round.

IMG_4457IMG_4460IMG_4461

Once you have all the flowers on the bouquet and it’s as big as you want start adding some here and there to fill in the spaces.

Bend the end of the wires in to avoid them sticking through the tape and/or rubbon.

Then wrap floral tape on a couple times. After that wrap it in the ribbon you want.

IMG_4434

For this tutorial I chose just lace, but I will be using ribbon and just tying a bow of lace on.

Enjoy your new button bouquets!

A helpful video I watched. They do it a little different than I do, but it’s a good video to watch:
